SuperKids Literacy Project 2010

Great Shape! Inc: SuperKids Project Overview
Skills to Read… Power to Lead

Great Shape! Inc. is a non-profit founded in Ashland, OR in 1988. The mission is to empower the children and families of Jamaica and the Caribbean through education and health care. SuperKids is one of three humanitarian projects facilitated by Great Shape! Inc.

SuperKids Overview
SuperKids is a two-week educational, humanitarian program in Jamaica. You can join us Nov. 5th - Nov.22, 2010. SuperKids provide resources, volunteers, and training to rural areas where the literacy rate is just 40%. We hope to help improve literacy, computer education, sponsor uniforms, and encourage sports, music, and arts for thousands of Jamaican children. SuperKids works with 1st - 6th grades where reading is an important building block for a child’s education.
SuperKids Volunteers
Each volunteer pays a $650 project fee, which covers the cost of the project. Sandals Foundation and Sandals Resorts International provide the accommodations, food, and in-country transportation at no charge. This is an opportunity to make a positive impact on a Jamaican child. About 70 volunteers are selected. In 2009, these volunteers served over 16,000 children and delivered 16,000 books.

Project Details
Reading Literacy
• Focus on early childhood literacy: volunteers work inside the classroom & one-on-one
• Teacher Training: support by the Jamaican Ministry of Education

o Partner with First Book: donates thousands of reading books to Great Shape!

Program Model: Delivery and Implementation
Great Shape! partners with rural school principals to assess needs of each school. Sandals Foundation sponsors our project by providing free rooms to our volunteers and logistical support. Each school commits to program continuation and will contribute to the project in the form of guidance, labor, leadership and support.
